Being in the cast of Baby by Barbara and Baby Jessica

Being one of the mums in the cast Baby has been an amazing experience! I get to work with an amazing cast and best of all I get to dance with my daughter, Jessica, who is the eldest baby at 19 months.   Jessica is the only girl, so she has now got a few boyfriends.

I was approached by Rhiannon as I found out after The Legacy in 2013/2014 (Rhiannon's previous show in which I was part of the community cast)  that I was expecting.  In 2015 I was asked about being part of the cast on the show Baby, as by that time Rhiannon had also had a baby.

The cast is amazing and has very talented dancers with Grace, Gracie and Mary and, now, Molly.  It has been nice watching the babies grow during rehearsals and being in the studio has been a conference builder for them.

The whole thing has been added to Jessica's memory book so that she can look back at the experience when she is older.  The last show in Roehampton was so amazing and as a mum I couldn't have been prouder of Jessica.  Jessica really entertained the audience during our scene as she clapped as we danced and even gave them a wave and said bye to them.  This is a show that can go so wrong as it has a risk factor and they do said never work with children or animals.   Well this is a show I am proud to be part of.

You must need a nanna! by dancer Mary Cox

I was in the cast of Rhiannon’s The Legacy Project which was performed as part of the 2014 Resolution Festival at The Place. So when I heard that she was making a new work, I emailed her: ‘If you’re making a piece about your baby, you must need a nanna!’ This was a tongue in cheek reference to my Olympic Closing Ceremony Granny costume which I wore in The Legacy Project.

I sat back and waited, expecting a small cameo role in the work. However, it was a case of be careful what you wish for, as, much to my surprise, I became one of the main cast, onstage for the whole of Baby.

We began rehearsals at the end of last year in various studios – some of which were very cold. Watching myself in the mirror, as the oldest cast member I was aware of how restricted my movements were compared to Gracie-Jane and Grace, so I worked hard to improve my flexibility and lose a little weight so that I might blend in better.

Came the performance night in January at The Place, I was very nervous as I didn’t want to let Rhiannon and the others down. However, all went as well as it could despite me fluffing one small section. My son, who hadn’t really seen me dance before, said he was sooo proud of me. Other friends were also full of praise and said they had enjoyed the work.

So rehearsals began again for the Footprints Festival at Roehampton. Rhiannon has made some improvements but the biggest change is Molly joining the cast as Gracie-Jane is unfortunately injured. Molly has fitted in really well and is a worthy substitute. Gracie-Jane has come along to coach Molly, so happily we haven’t lost touch with her.

The nicest part of being involved with Baby has been watching Dylan (Rhiannon’s inspiration for the piece) develop and grow. He has a sunny disposition and we’ve all enjoyed playing with him, entertaining him and having ‘conversations’ with him. I think he’ll miss all his ‘aunties’ when this performance is over. We’ll miss him too!

I’m very grateful to have been given the opportunity to perform in Baby. The show is really heartfelt, beautiful and honest. It is also the first time that I will dance on stage with just 3 other dancers. Thankfully the rest of the cast are fantastic. It is a real privilege to dance with such talented and lovely people.

The rehearsals have been a lot of fun. With so many babies around there is never a dull moment. Rhiannon is also very open to your ideas as a dancer and a performer, working with her is very collaborative, which has been great.

Please come and see us at the Footprint Dance Festival, we hope you enjoy the show as much as we are enjoying making it.

Where to start, firstly I'd like to say a massive thank you to Rhiannon Brace and the cast of BABY for making me feel so welcome. The last two weeks have been great, I have enjoyed every moment of working alongside extremely talented performers of all ages, from different backgrounds. It's given me a chance to get my teeth into something challenging and new.

Dance theatre has always been an interest of mine ever since training professionally at Creative Academy, and now having my first professional job in the field of Dance Theatre, contemporary and commercial is such a great achievement.

I am so looking forward to getting onto the stage next week to show off everything we have been working on. It's a heart touching piece and I can't wait to bring it to life.
