Casting/First rehearsal of Baby

Today was significant not only because it was my first casting/rehearsal for Baby but also it was the first time I had ventured out into the big wide world without my 8 week old.  This afternoon his dad was taking him shopping and enjoying some father-son time while I caught a train to The Place to cast my show.  I was nervous about being without him and had pangs of regret when I first got on the train but when I got into Central London I felt a sense of freedom.

Wow! I felt like I was on day release! I missed the little fella and his big blue eyes but enjoyed the freedom. How easy it is to get around without a pushchair to carry up and down stairs.  You can just glide along platforms and tap delicately up and down the stairs.  I had forgotten how neat and well dressed working people are with their outfits all colour co-ordinated (OK - they are mainly black and grey!) and neatly pressed with no visible spots of baby sick or milk leakage and the women with flawless make-up and perfect figures they would probably scream at the sight of my stretch marks and C-section scar.

The evening before I took my time to prepare dinner and, in the kitchen, I managed to work out a few phrases of choreography to a scene that I had been working on.  I had already selected the music which I put on repeat as I put the steriliser on.  This is how I tend to work - for me the music often comes first and from that I am able to visualize the scene.  So by dancing in the kitchen I was able to prepare the rehearsal.

And so I find myself in my favourite studio at The Place (Studio 8 - in case you are interested) laughing and instructing three lovely but very different dancers and I think I have my main cast.

Cast: Grace Kemp, Gracie-Jayne Angel, Mary Cox, Rhiannon Brace
Art Director: Laura D'Asta

Dylan has a meeting at the theatre

Dylan was just four weeks old when we attended the first meeting at The Place for Resolution! 2016.  As all the selected choreographers piled into the theatre we moved slowly to find a seat at the back.  Thankfully, he was really well behaved throughout the meeting and allowed me to concentrate and even take notes!

That trip, however, was our first family trip into London on the train since he was born and suddenly we had to face the reality of the tube with a pushchair and baby and even though my partner was there to help we really struggled.  Suddenly you realize the amount of tube stations without lifts and the amount of stairs around the tube system.  How do the disabled manage?  How do women with pushchairs ever go anywhere?  Yes, we have a sling at home but since pregnancy I was dealing with a back condition and the sling is not an option.  This first trip was a reality check to both of us and we were exhausted as a result - not just from carrying the pram up and down stairs but also from venturing into the real world away from baby land.

Since then, both of us have been trying to perfect techniques to enable me to get about on public transport with a pushchair such as how to go up and down escalators, which to a new mum is frightening, but it is not too difficult once you know how.  Also how to bump a pram up and down stairs. I now watch more experienced mother with admiration for their technique with stairs. What I love most of all though is those kind people who stop their hurried journey on the tube to help carry the pram up and down stairs or off trains - we love you!

I know that for the show to be made I need to be able to get about on the tube alone so that I can take Dylan to the studio for rehearsals with me.  I'm getting there but I have still not tried it alone yet.  Watch this space.....

What a few months it has been! Baby Dylan was finally born overdue at 41 weeks + 3 days on 26 August at 2.30am.  That was six weeks ago and I am just about recovered from the emergency c section and hoping to begin exercising again.  I'm planning on getting my Darcey Bussell Pilates and Barbara Currie Yoga dvds out very soon!!

While getting used to motherhood and recovering from surgery, the news hit my inbox that I had been selected for Resolution! 2016 at The Place with my proposed new show about pregnancy and motherhood.  I was so relieved that I actually got my application in for Resolution, as I almost didn't.

This will be my third time at Resolution and every time I have applied it has always been a bit hit or miss whether I will actually press the submit button for the online application.

On the day of the Resolution deadline I was still bleeding from birth and had been passing blood clots which seemed to be increasing both in quantity and size.  On calling the hospital for advice I was advised to go straight to A&E to get myself checked out.  It all sounded a bit dramatic to me and it wasn't until I passed a blood clot the size of a hand that I decided to listen to this advice.  However, on the way to the hospital I remembered that it was the Resolution deadline at 5pm and it was now 1pm so I asked my partner if we could go back home for me to complete the application and press submit.

Most of my application was already completed but there were gaps in the questions and the last couple of pages were blank.  My partner and baby waited in the car while I very quickly went through the online form and finally submitted then off we went to A&E!
